10 ways to keep yourself motivated in college
Hi guys, welcome back!
Staying motivated throughout the semester can be a very difficult thing, I can personally vouch for it. When all the assignments and exams start to pile up, it can feel like your continuously drowning in an endless cycle of exams, presentations, and homework. So today, I am going to share 10 ways that I keep myself motivated.
1. Have the right perspective
College is hard. As a college student, you're constantly being hammered with assignments, exams, and projects and on top of that, we also have to juggle our sleep, work, and social life. So, at times everything can seem pretty daunting and it doesn't seem like your going to make it through the semester with reasonable grades or GPA. But the important thing to remember is that as long you have a negative outlook on everything, you won't succeed. It's all about setting your mind to something.
2. Set goals
Personally for me, when I set my goals, it challenges me and in a way makes tasks more exciting. Not only that but a big part of me setting goals is because it allows me to be satisfied and accomplished at the end of the day. And, in my opinion, I think taking a big task and making small goals out of it, makes it easier for me to complete the task.
3. Stay organized
Part of not being motivated is due to the fact that nothing is ever organized. If your desk is a mess and your due dates are a mess, it's only going to enforce that feeling of being overwhelmed. Something that I like to do, is write down all of my upcoming due dates on a whiteboard. And that whiteboard is the first and last thing I see when I wake up and sleep. By having my due dates written down, it helps minimize the feeling that I am drowning in school work.
4. Get rid of distractions
Okay, I am the worst at distractions. I get distracted by virtually anything and everything, my phone being the biggest one. It was hard for me at first, but I had to get rid of that distraction. I know, I know, this generation can't possibly live without checking their mentions or who just sent them a snap. But you don't have to get rid of it completely, I simply put it on do not disturb, that way, I won't constantly have to hear my phone vibrate and when I'm done with my assignments, I can simply turn it off and everything that I missed will be there waiting for me.
5. Take breaks
If you're continuously working and not taking any breaks, you are going to fry your brain. Even if its a ridiculously important assignment and you absolutely have to get a good grade on it, working on it non stop isn't the way to go, trust me. Because once you're done with that assignment and you're looking back on it, you're going to see a crazy amount of errors. Good news, taking a break can actually help you be more productive. So take a break, even if its only a 10-minute one.
6. Celebrate your success
Did you just get an A on that paper that was due? Well pause all your hard work and go celebrate. In order to succeed, you have to recognize your successful moments. Rewarding yourself on that A you just got will not only make you feel accomplished but it will keep you going - motivated.
7. Get support
College is overwhelming when you're going through it by yourself. So reach out to a friend or a family member for support. Reaching out to your friends and family will allow you to express your struggles and they can be the extra boost you need in order to get back into the swing of college.
8. Don't let one failure hold you back
We all experience failures and we all occasionally receive a grade that absolutely breaks your heart but just because you got one bad grade doesn't mean that everything is over. I know when you first see that C, you start to question everything and it makes you believe that you are truly going to fail and it's just better to quit than to keep going. But one bad grade isn't the end of your world. We all have our moments, we just have to remember that it's one bad grade out of ten.
9. Prioritize important tasks
College comes with a tedious amount of work so its important to recognize, which assignments weigh the most percentage wise. If it's an exam that's worth 40% of your overall grade and you know its tough material, then you probably shouldn't wait until the night before to start studying, because at that point you're just selling yourself up for failure. So study and highlight the crap out of your syllabus.
10. Remember the big picture
While college may be overwhelming and at times, it might be hard to stay motivated, you have to remember the big picture. For most of us, the real reason why we're in college is to earn a degree so we can lead successful lives. So all that overwhelming amount of work that's being piled up on you, is totally worth it in the end. Because in the end, you will have the satisfaction of saying that you were able to get through all those assignments, exams, and presentation for that degree that you've always wanted.
